Be part of something bigger!
We all need to feel like we matter and that our life can make a difference to something bigger, beyond ourselves.
Meaning matters for happiness and there are actions that can help us find or create it.
We are all part of something bigger.
So what is meaning?
In a nutshell it boils down to being part of, and/or contributing to something bigger, beyond ourselves.
It can be broken down onto 3 parts:
1.making sense of our life, the world around us, how it works and how we fit into it.
2.feeling that we can make a difference (be it in a small or large way), that life is worth living or fulfilling, and that we have value,
3.purpose – a sense of direction in life, or personally important longer term aims we strive towards. Purpose might show up as our goals or it could be more general, deeply felt intentions or values, such as to be a good parent, friend or partner, help others in our community or leave the world a better place.
There’s no single prescription to what meaning means in our lives, it may evolve over time and change over the course of our lives.
People who have a sense of meaning tend to;
Experience more positive emotions
Feel more positive about the future
Have greater life satisfaction
Have more satisfying relationships
Feel better about themselves
Have a stronger immune system.
So how do we find or create meaning?
– Meaning can be found in simple day to day moments. A good way to tap into this is practising gratitude. It can help us appreciate what we have and help us recognise what we value most.
-by helping others – it can help take our mind off what we are missing and help us focus on something bigger than us
-by learning something new
-developing a hobby
-working towards a personally important goal
